In a bid to ensure the smooth and hassle-free movement of ambulances on National Highways (NHW), the Traffic Police have issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in compliance with Section 194-E of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988. The Act specifies that drivers must pull over when approaching emergency vehicles like fire service trucks or ambulances, with penalties including up to six months of imprisonment or a fine of up to ten thousand rupees for non-compliance.
The SOP emphasizes that Traffic Supervisory Officers in their respective Areas of Responsibility (AOR) must prioritize the free movement of ambulances, especially those carrying critical patients, trauma victims, or deceased individuals. The circular also introduces a color-coding system for ambulances: Red for critical patients, Blue for non-critical patients, and Black for deceased patients. This will help differentiate the urgency of each case.
Additionally, the Traffic Officers are instructed to maintain constant communication with Traffic Control Units (TCUs), Police Control Rooms (PCRs), Hospital Authorities, and NGOs to ensure the safety and security of patients while enroute. Officers should monitor traffic congestion, weather conditions, and explore alternate routes for safer passage.
