Three Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Jammu and Kashmir have submitted separate private members’ bills advocating for a ban on liquor in the region. The legislators include Mir Mohammad Fayaz of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from Kupwara, Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad of the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) from Langate, and Ahsan Pardesi of the National Conference (NC) from Lal Chowk.
PDP leader Iltija Mufti praised Mir Fayaz’s move, calling alcohol consumption a “threat” to society. She highlighted how the easy availability of alcohol, due to an increase in liquor stores since 2019, is damaging lives in J&K.
Ahsan Pardesi from NC also supported the bill, stating that the sale of alcohol disregards Kashmir’s religious and cultural values. He added that alcohol consumption has never been part of the Valley’s social fabric and contributes to crime, addiction, and moral degradation, especially among the youth.
AIP MLA Sheikh Khursheed, who is also the brother of MP Er Rashid, noted that he was the first to submit a bill seeking a complete liquor ban in the J&K Assembly. Additionally, he has presented a bill calling for a ban on online gaming and fantasy leagues in the region.
If allowed for introduction, the bills will be discussed in the upcoming budget session starting March 3. BJP leader Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the need to protect young people from the dangers of drugs and alcohol. She welcomed the proposal, saying it would be beneficial for the younger generation in the region.
