Zorawar Singh Jamwal, Chairman of Team Jammu, has made a passionate appeal to all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to put aside political differences and unite in tackling the escalating drug crisis. Jamwal called for the death penalty for those convicted of smuggling and selling narcotics, emphasizing that drugs are destroying the future of the younger generation.
Speaking at a press conference at the Press Club today, Jamwal, along with Team Jammu leaders Dr. Ashish Gupta and Rajesh Kapoor, expressed deep concern over the growing drug problem, despite the ongoing efforts by J&K Police and other agencies. Jamwal urged the administration to honor its commitment to take stringent action against drug peddlers.
With the upcoming Assembly Budget Session, discussions surrounding a proposed liquor ban are gaining momentum, with several MLAs from the PDP and National Conference advocating for a statewide prohibition. While Jamwal expressed Team Jammu’s support for a clear government policy on liquor ban, he stressed the urgency of a focused debate on drug abuse. He urged the MLAs to pass a resolution that includes a death penalty for drug smugglers.
Jamwal also voiced alarm over the increasing addiction rates among youth, calling for enhanced police surveillance at known drug hotspots and a thorough crackdown on drug networks. He criticized certain elements within the administration for not taking the issue seriously and questioned why entrenched drug mafias have yet to be dismantled despite years of law enforcement efforts.
Team Jammu further highlighted the international angle of the crisis, accusing Pakistan of exacerbating narco-terrorism in J&K. Jamwal urged the government to take a strong stand against cross-border drug smuggling, warning that the rise in drug-related violence is a direct result of this conspiracy. He called for intensified anti-narcotics operations and greater transparency in documenting drug-related deaths to break the drug supply chain and combat the growing menace.
