The Bharatiya Janata Party’s National General Secretary and Jammu and Kashmir in-charge, Tarun Chugh, on Friday strongly condemned the comments made by the National Conference regarding Maharaja Hari Singh. Chugh emphasized that the contributions of the great ruler are integral to the culture, history, and identity of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Maharaja Hari Singh not only played a significant role in the progress of the state but also made a historic contribution to its integration with the Indian Republic,” said Chugh while addressing the media. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to preserving the rich legacy of Maharaja Hari Singh, whose contributions to the region remain unparalleled.
Chugh highlighted that Maharaja Hari Singh was more than just a ruler—he was a visionary leader who led progressive reforms, modernization, and inclusive governance. His contributions to education, healthcare, and administration were pivotal in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s socio-economic landscape.
He expressed disappointment at some individuals, driven by political selfishness and narrow-mindedness, who continue to insult Maharaja Hari Singh. “Such attacks are not only an affront to the identity of Jammu and Kashmir but also an attempt to hurt the sentiments of millions who revere the Maharaja as their ideal,” Chugh asserted.
Chugh pointed out that Maharaja Hari Singh introduced landmark reforms that protected the rights of marginalized communities and promoted social justice. His secular outlook, he added, fostered communal harmony in the region. “Any attempt to malign his legacy is unacceptable and must be retracted immediately,” he said.
The BJP urged political leaders to exercise caution and responsibility when commenting on historical figures. Chugh called on National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and his party to issue a clarification and retract the remarks, as such statements create unnecessary controversy and hurt public sentiments.
Chugh further reiterated the BJP’s commitment to honoring and preserving the contributions of historical leaders who played a crucial role in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s identity. He also addressed the July 13, 1931, incident, calling it a “black day and a day of betrayal,” reaffirming the BJP’s stance on the truth of history.
The BJP leader made it clear that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would never tolerate such insulting statements and actions. He warned that any attempt to distort history or undermine the contributions of great leaders would be met with a strong response. The Bharatiya Janata Party, along with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, is committed to protecting the honor of their great hero, Maharaja Hari Singh.
